Morality Vs Reality

Following from a comment by Fletch to a recent post. I often struggle with the concept of "morality". For example when it comes to abortion. I don't think anyone really thinks abortion is a good thing. It's not good for the mother physically and mentally and it's definitely not good for the potential baby.

So in an ideal sense abortion is bad. In an ideal world there wouldn't be abortions.

We however live in a less than ideal world. People are going to have abortions. I believe it’s not our place to judge others. I also believe that may churches and Christians generally come across as being judgemental. Now abortion isn’t the only issue here. Sex before marriage is another. Are there any others?

Should morals be “realistic”? Are morals relative? Should we as individuals and churches or any other groups impose our morals on others? Have we the right to judge anyone else by our own moral code?

Am I morally compromised? I personally don’t think so ;)

I’d love to hear your thoughts though.

i think the point about christians being overly judgmental needs to be looked at 2 ways...and unfortunatly i struggle with both of them...the first is that ur so right they (me at times included im so sad to say) are overly and very badly judgmental, even about silly little things...the second way of looking at it is that we are called to higher standards, and if it is these higher standards that we are living by (which most christians arnt) then there may be some right for them to judge but saying that the bible says we are not to do it cos we look on the outside and God sees the heart...i think its crap how christians judge people (having been badly judged myself many times) it hurts and can put ppl of christianity...
as for morals and such again im stuck with some issues such as abortion, i believe its wrong...but how do u tell that to a young women who has been raped or made a few mistakes...or how do u tell that to parents who know their baby is deformed or has a terrible disease ...its a tough one and one that i struggle with...
as for sex b4 marriage my views on that have been set since highschool when i saw the distruction it caused amongst my friends and what i still see going on around me today...it is God created for a spacific context and thats marriage...
and as for being morally compromised...your morals and ur choice of ethics are your personal decision...just as are mine...and as long as u live by them and dont swim all over the place then ur morals are yours to live by...the church on the other hand SHOULD have a high moral coade...its what Christ endorsed...'live as i did' he is the supreme example of how we are to live, the stanses we must take (at times though the church takes this way to far...u only have to look at history to see that)...but we are not perfect...so to cut all this short as long as in ur heart u are following Christ and living by ur morals and are content with that then all the more power to you...

Good comments becs.

It seems to me that Christ was a fantastic example while on earth. Not only did he promote a high moral standing, but he didn't judge other people. He loved them despite their failings, flaws and wrong doings and encouraged people to live as he did.

I think that's pretty amazing.

If only the church could replicate this aspect of christ.
